The Samsung Galaxy S III: The First Smartphone Designed Entirely By Lawyers

The Galaxy S III is... well... it's ugly. There's really no other way to put it. But why? Why is it ugly? I don't mean aesthetically, why is it ugly, I mean, "How did something like this ever make it out of Samsung's design studio?" I'll tell you how, it was never in the design studio. This phone design was born down the hall, in a room where the door sign reads "Samsung Legal."
It was designed by lawyers.
I can tell just from the press shots, this thing is a Samsung lawyer's dream. I'm sure you must be thinking,"Hmm, that's a weird assumption to make." but don't worry, an explanation is forthcoming. We're going to take a trip, way, way back to the prehistoric times of April 18, 2011: The day Apple claimed ownership of the rectangle.
Remember this? It's Apple's trade dress lawsuit against Samsung. For those that don't remember, or just weren't paying attention: "Trade Dress" is a legal thing, a form of intellectual property, basically a trademark for how a product looks, as opposed to a logo or word. Like a trademark offers protection to the use of a word or the look of a logo, trade dress offers protection on design. Trade dress lets Apple say to Samsung "Your product looks too much like our product; prepare to be sued into oblivion!"
Back in April 2011, Apple's trade dress infringement claims against Samsung went like this:
  • a rectangular product shape with all four corners uniformly rounded;

  • the front surface of the product dominated by a screen surface with black borders;

  • as to the iPhone and iPod touch products, substantial black borders above and below the screen having roughly equal width and narrower black borders on either side of the screen having roughly equal width;

  • as to the iPad product, substantial black borders on all sides being roughly equal in width;

  • a metallic surround framing the perimeter of the top surface;

  • a display of a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners; and

  • a bottom row of square icons (the "Springboard") set off from the other icons and that do not change as the other pages of the user interface are viewed.

  • That is basically a list of things you aren't allowed to do. Now, individually, those traits aren't worthy of a lawsuit. It's the combination of those things that will send Apple Legal over to kick down your door. The combination of those attributes got the Galaxy S and SII in legal hot water, so for the S III, Samsung made this list their "Hey, don't do this" design guidelines. That's right, the entire phone design revolves around not pissing off Apple.
    Why should Samsung care about what Apple thinks? Well for one, there's the aforementioned legal goon squad, and for two, Apple is one of Samsung's biggest customers. Not for phones - walking around Apple campus with a Galaxy phone sounds like a good way to get fired - Apple is one of Samsung's biggest customers for components. Samsung makes all sorts of phone and tablet components: CPUs, RAM, flash memory, displays, and more, and they want Apple to buy them - and they do. The iPhone 4, for example, owes about 25% of its component cost to Samsung. Apple sells a lot of phones, so that's a lot of cash in Samsung's pocket. The iPhone/Galaxy battle is a win/win for Samsung, and they would like to keep it that way.
    Which brings us back to the The Phone Designed By Lawyers. Maybe you aren't a believer yet. Well, it's time for some evidence. Let's run down the list of trade dress grievances, shall we?

    Intel launches Ivy Bridge with 37 percent faster processing

    The long-awaited next generation of Intel processors has arrived. Intel announced its 22 nanometer processors, coded-named Ivy Bridge, at a press conference Monday.
    We all knew Ivy Bridge would be fast, but these new processors are about 20 percent faster than Intel’s previous offerings. Intel also says the third-generation Core chips operate with 20 percent less energy than Sandy Bridge, the code name for the previous generation of processors.
    “[Ivy Bridge is] 20 percent better performance on multithreaded applications, two times better 3D graphics, and twice as fast media processing, compared to the previous generation,” said Intel corporate vice president Kirk Skaugen at a press conference in San Francisco.
    “I’m here to say that Moore’s Law is alive and well,” Skaugen said.
    The new chips boast a 22 nanometer transistor design, in contrast to Intel’s Sandy Bridge, which has 32 nanometer transistors. The higher density chips mean computers with Ivy Bridge chips will be faster and will handle media playback much better than before.
    Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 support is integrated with Ivy Bridge, which makes data transfer between cameras and external hard drives faster. USB 3.0 has been introduced for PCs and Thunderbolt is available on Apple computers and one Sony Vaio model.
    “A video that used to take five minutes to transfer will take 30 seconds and going from five minutes to less than 30 seconds is a big deal,” said Skaugen.
    What will catch many gamers’ and video editors’ eyes is the integrated graphics processing unit, which will make editing videos faster and game play sharper. One-third of the chips’ estimated 1.4 billion transistors are contained within the GPU.
    Ivy Bridge will also offer support for up to three displays, for those who like wide computer real estate on their desks.
    Previous computer chips had a flat transistor design, but Ivy Bridge employs tri-gate designs, in which the microscopic transistors contain a small, raised “fin,” enabling greater density of transistors on the chip and also facilitating lower power consumption. The raised nature of the chip has led to Ivy Bridge’s “3D” moniker. Intel has been working on tri-gate technology since 2001, and made a splash when it announced the new transistor in 2011, but this is the first family of chips to contain the new type of transistor.
    “Even back [in 2001] we realized the planar structure would run out of steam,” said Mark Bohr, an Intel senior fellow who led the development of tri-gate transistors.
    “We had reservations [about adopting tri-gate], but after Mark described the performance enhancements…especially at low voltages, we were convinced its was the right choice,” said Intel program manager Brad Heaney.
    Intel’s chips fall into “Tick” and “Tock” releases. Tocks are major processor architecture changes and ticks are smaller process changes based on the same architecture. Intel is calling Ivy Bridge a “Tick+” because it is adding a new processor and media subsystem.
    Despite a marketing campaign that Intel started at the Consumer Electronics Show in early 2012, the new chips won’t be immediately available for Ultrabooks, powerful and thin PC laptops that would compete with the MacBook Air. Instead, they will be used in Intel’s Core i7 and Core i5 quad-core processors for desktop and laptops first.
    Intel said that manufacturers are planning more than 270 desktop and all-in-one models and 300 laptops based on the new processors. Pricing for the new processors will be close to Sandy Bridge, so we shouldn’t see a dramatic price increase on the consumer end.
    Intel wouldn’t say exactly when we can expect ultrabooks with Ivy Bridge, but said it would be in the next couple of months. Ivy Bridge for ultrabooks will be dual-core processors ad run at a lower voltage to accomodate the thinness of a ultrabook, Skaugen said.

    • 5% referral commission

    My Review:

    CPX24 is a paid to promote site where you get paid to promote the website in many different ways, including PTP links which you can promote anywhere you want, banner code which you put into your blog/website, and lastly pop-under code which is also for blog/website. The site is based on impressions, therefore there is no click requirement from visitors in order for you to get paid. Simply copy and paste the banner or pop-under code to your blog/website and you are ready to make money.

    From my experience, although it is stated that the CPM is up to $2, but I hardly get any valid hits for this site. Until now I'm still not sure how did they count the hits, sometimes I've sent more than 100 visitors to my website but I only get 1 hit on my CPX24 account. Although minimum cashout is only $0.50 but it takes very long time to reach. So far I only manage to reach the minimum cashout one time, and I got paid for that, proven that CPX24 is not scam.
